I met Cooper in August of 2007 when, at midnight, after seven hours on the road, driving to Maryland for my aunt's funeral, I chanced to unexpectedly stumble across a pair of recently severed human legs. I hate New Jersey. By the way, when multiple cars hit a human body on a highway, tearing it apart, the result smells like BBQ.
This was a rather disturbing experience for me resulting in some certain acute stress reactions. Being me, I dealt with it the way I deal with most strong emotions- I opened MS Word.
The character in that brief drabble percolated for a couple months, and became my protagonist for my 2007 NaNoWriMo novel. The entire book almost collapsed in on itself after only a couple chapters around mid-month, before our fantastic Bri (known to most of you as NotAnotherExit) recommended that I bring in a character who had recently been cut from Persistence of Memory. Said character revitalized the book, and lo-and-behold, Cooper hit 50k by about 11:50 on November 31, and was finished in first-draft form in December.
